2015 Year In Review

2015 Year In Review

In 2016, Friends in Focus is entering its fourth year of existence and we do this emboldened by what the organization was able to achieve in 2015. It was truly an expanding and encompassing year that saw the organization growing in acceptance as a partner, focused on its mission of advancing the educational opportunities of students in Montgomery County, North Carolina and improving and increasing programs and activities for senior citizens in Mount Gilead and the surrounding area.

Below are some of the initiatives and accomplishments of Friends In Focus in 2015:

  • completed the third year of our mentoring program (Gators’ Good Guys) at Mt. Gilead Elementary School. We continued to enhance the program with focus on behavior as well as the value of a top-shelf (quality) education. The fourth and fifth grade young men who completed the year long course were introduced to the ‘formula for success’, supported by the ‘twelve rules of success’.
  • our tutoring program (Saturday Academy), also completing three years, at Highland Community Center continued to grow, working with an average of 17 students, each month (girls and guys), with concentration on reading, math and etiquette. The students traveled to Charlotte, NC, for a cultural experience at the Harvey B. Grant Center for African American Arts and Culture as well as an entertaining movie at Discovery Place in Charlotte.
  • sponsored and produced the Annual Community Appreciation Gala in Mt. Gilead, recognizing and honoring Mr. Eddie B. Coleman, Sr., with the Milfred F. Greene Outstanding Achievement Award, for his lifelong contribution in education and community service. It was a great evening with approximately 200 guests and friends.
  • created seven (7) college scholarships for minority seniors in the Montgomery County School System, to help encourage more minorities attend college. These scholarships were presented to the students at the schools’ senior day awards program. The scholarship program continues to grow.
  • launched the ‘Reading For Success!!!’ program at Mount Gilead Elementary School designed to provide assistance to students who need help becoming more proficient in reading. Volunteers are assigned to classes and work individually with the students to improve their reading skills.
  • co-sponsored and conducted a three-week summer enrichment program at Highland Community Center focused on reading, math and preventing ‘summer slide’. One of the goals of this program is to help students retain what was learned during the previous school year. Activities included a trip to Discovery Place in Charlotte, North Carolina.
  • for the third year, participated in the summer reading enrichment program (Give 5, Read 5) of Mt. Gilead Elementary School and donated 400 books for students to read over the summer to help prevent ‘summer slide’. In three years, we have donated almost 1000 books in support of this program.
  • continued our work with the Mount Gilead Economic Development Council, as co-sponsor of the ONE COMMUNITY initiative, where all citizens are asked to work together to improve Mount Gilead and surrounding communities for the benefit of all. This led to ‘clean up’ details fostering community pride and increased activities for senior citizens – Coffee With The Seniors. Other initiatives are centered around education and job creation for the citizens.
  • for the second year sponsored the trip for the West Montgomery High School AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) students to attend the Third Annual AVID Day for North and South Carolina students, in Charlotte, NC, focused on bridging the achievement gap and encouraging students to attend college.
