Friends In Focus Scholarship Program’s Instructions:

Friends In Focus, an organization working in Montgomery County supporting communities, will award at least six scholarships this academic year (2015/16) to deserving minority seniors attending East and West Montgomery High Schools.

These scholarships are support for minority students in their quest to receive a college education. The scholarships are for one year only and limited to undergraduate studies. Applications will be accepted up to May 2, 2016. Qualifications and procedures are described below:

  • eligible minority applicants reside in Montgomery County, attend East or West Montgomery High School and a member of the senior class.
  • demonstrated leadership in school work or activities outside of school. Volunteer work in his or her community is a plus.
  • applicants must be accepted by an accredited 2 or 4 year college or university or vocational- technical school, for the fall semester following high school graduation.
  • the age of the applicant must be 24 or under
  • applicants must have at least an GPA of 2.75 by the fall semester during which the scholarship application is filed.

The complete application package includes the following:

  • a fully completed Friends In Focus Organization scholarship application
  • an official school transcript properly documented to the beginning of the fall semester during which the scholarship application is filed.
  • an essay (250 to 300 words) expressing why the applicant should receive the scholarship, highlighting leadership roles in school work or community, plus describing volunteer work in the community.
  • two (2) letters of recommendation, one from a teacher who taught the applicant and one from a leader in the community, supporting the student’s candidacy for the scholarship.

Applications must be received by the designated deadline (Applications must be postmarked no later than May 2, 2016). The selection committee will not consider applications received late for review. Notification of the scholarship recipients will be officially completed by May 16th. A copy of the award notification will be mailed to the award winners along with an invitation to a presentation dinner with the Board of Directors of Friends In Focus and the general community.

Each of the recipients will receive the scholarship award for his or her first year in an accredited college, university or vocational-technical school. Distribution will be made directly to the school.
